Spanish GCSE
GCSE
This is a fairly intensive and express course, which covers the WJEC GCSE syllabus in 1 year.
Please note that this is an examination course. All students sit the WJEC-set GCSE examinations at the end of the course
Course Content
The course covers the language needed to cope with a range of everyday situations which might arise during a visit to Spain or when hosting a visit from Spanish friends (eg asking for and giving directions, getting information at the tourist office, checking into a hotel, travelling, shopping, eating out) and develops general conversational skills (talking about ourselves, our families, interests, jobs, studies, etc). Listening and reading comprehension skills are also developed. Though grammar is not a major part of the course, we do look at the basic workings of the language. New language is reinforced and practised during the conversation sessions, using games, structured role-play dialogues and other activities. In the lead up to the examination these sessions will be used to help you to prepare for the oral assessment.
How it is Taught
The course is taught in 2 ½ hours per week. Vocabulary is built up and oral, listening, reading and writing skills developed by progression through the topics referred to above, using specially produced course notes supplemented by audio and video material. Given the intensive nature of the course, much of the teaching is whole-class and teacher-led, but there is also time for pair and small group work and for language games and activities designed to put the language to practical use.
Examination Details
The examination is in four parts:
- Listening (20%): Listen to a recording of a series of short dialogues and answer questions on them.
- Speaking (30%): Prepare a short talk in Spanish and during the approximately 12 minute examination, give the talk, answer questions on it and take part in a short conversation.
- Reading (20%): Read a series of short passages and answer questions on them.
- Writing (30%): Two written tasks prepared during the course and completed in 'controlled conditions' during a lesson.
Materials Needed
Course material will be provided. There is normally a small charge for photocopying. It is useful, though not essential, to have a Spanish - English dictionary.
Entry Requirements
There is no formal entry requirement for evening class students but we advise all those intending to take this course that reaching GCSE level in eight months is no mean feat and demands enthusiasm and a capacity for hard work.
Careers and HE Information
A number of our evening class students have progressed through our courses from Beginners' Level to A Level and beyond. Some have gone on to study at degree level, found work in Spain or have participated in voluntary projects in Spanish-speaking countries. Others are putting their Spanish to good use in this country in business or education.
