How it is Taught

This course provides a broad based introduction the Leisure and Tourism industry through a series of study units. Students should have a real interest in the Leisure and Tourism industry and be able to work on their own.

Coursework units comprise 66% of the final grade and are taught in a vocational context including visits to facilities such as Newcastle Football Club, Wet and Wild and The Blue Reef Aquarium.

Work experience allows students to gain first hand experience of the industry and organising an event provides an opportunity to work as part of a team and develop independent skills. Other additional courses such as the Welcome Host customer care award are offered to enhance the programme.

Unit 1: Investigating Leisure & Tourism (1 hour) January

Entry Requirements

Most students who take the Leisure & Tourism GCSE are on the one year Transition to Advanced Level Programme. In order to be able to move on to AS Levels at the end of the Transition Programme, a student should normally have achieved at least two GCSE's at grade C at the end of year 11.

Useful/Common Subject Combinations

This course is usually accompanied by GCSE resits in Maths, English or Science.
A Study Skills session may also form part of the overall programme of study.

Careers and HE Information

Many students progress on to Advanced courses at QE. Students also progress to Modern Apprenticeships or go straight to employment.
