GCE Advanced Level AS/A2

Course Content

Unit 1
Anatomy: Movement analysis including bones, muscles and joints. Heart and circulation. Respiration.
Skill Acquisition: Learning and developing skilful movement.
Contemporary Studies: Issues connected with sport in society. History of sport.

Unit 2
Practical Coaching.
Practical activity assessment.

Unit 3
Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics and Sports Psychology.
Factors which affect the development of an elite athlete, includes media, sponsorship, hooliganism and World games.

Unit 4
Practical Coaching or Practical Assessment in a full competitive situation. Knowledge of skills, strategies and tactics in attack and defence and good knowledge of rules is essential.

Club level in one sport.

How it is Taught

40% at AS Practical and Coaching
40% at A2 Practical and Coaching

60% of units are teacher-led using a combination of styles and practical examples to demonstrate theoretical issues.

Students regularly complete exam style tasks and questions.

Entry Requirements

Students should have a GCSE grade C in Science (or a Merit in BTEC First Certificate) and a GCSE grade C in either Maths or English and participate at club level in one sport.

Students should also meet the general college entry requirements for advanced level study. Please refer to the current Prospectus - advanced programmes, entry requirements.

Useful/Common Subject Combinations

The subject combines well with Leisure & Recreation, Health & Social Care, Psychology, Biology, and Physics.

A student cannot take both A Level PE with Coaching and A Level Physical Education.

Careers and HE Information

A number of students progress to related courses at university and take up careers in Physical Education teaching, physiotherapy, sport and exercise science, sports coaching and the sport and leisure industry.
