Access to HEFC Higher Education

This module is an advanced language course which aims to develop in students an effective and confident command of English by means of full class teaching, critical discussion and practice. It is designed to prepare students to meet the demands of study in Higher Education, and will particularly accommodate the language needs of students who have been out of formal education for some time.

No previous experience of study is required, but GCSE English would be beneficial.

The course aims to develop interest in, understanding and critical appreciation of the context, structure, style and diversity of language and literary and non-literary texts.

Course Content

Unit 1: Writing grounded in the personal

  • Personal writing
  • Group presentation
  • Persuasive writing

Unit 2: Reports and Reviews

  • Written report
  • Response to literary texts under test conditions

Assessment

Unit 2

  • Response to literary texts

Assessment is mainly coursework based but with a final literacy piece produced in class under test conditions. As well as whole class teaching, there will be emphasis on discussion, group work, oral presentations and independent research.

There are no prescribed textbooks: a variety of texts will be used, taken from a wide range of sources.

This course is offered during the day and also on an evening - Thursday 6.30 - 9.30pm.
