North East Badminton Champions

North East Badminton Champions

For the first time, QE hosted a major British Colleges' Sports Event. Last week, using the new Sports Hall, the College held the North East regional badminton championships. Players from all over the region - Scarborough, Huddersfield, York, Hartlepool, Guisborough - travelled to Darlington to compete in the prestigious competition, vying for places in the national finals.

The College's four badminton courts were kept busy all day as 30 competitors played matches in four events: boys and girls singles; boys and girls doubles.

Mark Scott was one of the event's organisers and he was delighted that the College not only organised the competition but also that QE students did very well. He says:

"Our students book both the boys and girls doubles' titles and really deserved their success. Katie Zissler and Jenny Blewitt won all three of their matches and worked hard in the final to defeat a strong Yorkshire pair from Greenhead College, Huddersfield. Ian Dufty and Matthew Sellars won all five of their matches and performed consistently well to beat opposition of a very high standard. Both QE pairs, as North East Champions, now go on to represent the North East region at the National Finals at Loughborough University in March. It was an excellent day - a pleasure to host the event, and to have winning pairs made it even more rewarding."

Katie Zissler also finished third in the girls' singles and Jonathan Eldrett finished sixth in the boys' competition.
