What a Discovery!

Advanced Level Travel & Tourism students found the Discovery Museum in Newcastle an excellent resource for their study unit on Cultural Attractions.

For the unit, students had to investigate educational resources provided by a facility and produce support materials for the facility's use. It seemed a good idea to use the Discovery Museum for this, but most of the students were initially disheartened when they found that the Museum did not have any materials for Travel and Tourism. However, this turned out to be beneficial as they decided to create their own!

The materials the students produced included education packs on Customer Service and Market Research; student Elle Wong even created a replica of the Museum's information leaflet in Cantonese.

Teacher Melanie Barker commented:

"The quality and nature of the materials created by the students was impressive. The complexity of the issues covered, such as key marketing tools - SWOT and PEST analysis - is indicative of the high level at which they are working."

The Discovery Museum's Learning Officer, Adam Goldwater, visited the College to see samples of the materials and was equally impressed. He said:

"The students grasped the difficult constraints we work under and have produced resources Tyne & Wear Museums themselves would be proud of! Let's hope the external examiners recognise this and that they get the high marks they deserve."
