Family Award
Romeela Rana-Rahman was nominated for a Special Achiever Award in the 2004 Celebration of Learning Awards. At the awards ceremony held at Tall Trees on Friday, 26th November, Romeela was delighted to find out that she had won the Family Achiever category.
Romeela is dedicated to her family and has played a key role in caring for her disabled mother and her brother and sister. As well as looking after her family and doing general household tasks, she is responsible for cleaning out the family's goats! In spite of these commitments, she is a high academic achiever. She attained mainly A* and A grades at GCSE and is now studying a demanding AS level programme of Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, History and General Studies at QE. Romeela hopes to go on to university and study medicine, fulfilling her lifelong ambition of becoming a doctor.
Romeela said:
"I was very surprised to have been shortlisted, let alone to have won the prize. I don't feel that I do anything out of the ordinary. I just help my family because I love them."
Romeela plans to use her £1000 prize money to help her study and go on to university; she'll also share some of it with her family.
The Celebration of Learning Awards are designed to recognise the achievements of young people in the Tees Valley and were sponsored by Connexions, the Learning & Skills Council and Job Centre Plus.
