North East 5-A-Side Champions

North East 5-A-Side Champions

A squad of Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College students travelled from Darlington to Soccer City at Huddersfield for the annual British Colleges’ North East boys’ 5-a–side competition and they came away victorious.

PE teacher Mark Scott comments:

"The QE squad won their group with wins over Norton College, Sheffield (2-0), City of Sunderland (5-3) and Hull (3-1) to set up a mouth-watering match against New College, Durham – an academy team who train every day. Despite controlling the game against New College, QE couldn’t convert their chances and at full-time the scores were level at 2-2. This forced extra time when Lewis Henry popped up with a last-gasp winner. QE then turned on the style, beating Prior Pursglove, Guisborough 5-0 in the semi-final then Hartlepool 4-0 in the final.

The lads fully deserved to win the competition due to their skill, pace and fitness and, most of all, their team spirit. All of the players played a big part in their victory - they all played and fought for each other all the way and accepted that we were a squad, not a team. This allowed us to rotate the starting players and use all 3 subs as “impact” players half way through the 20 minute game when the opponents were getting tired. The squad now goes to national finals at Loughborough University to represent the North-East in April."
