Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro

Next weekend, Phillip Moore faces a massive challenge. On 2nd December he travels to Tanzania to join 15 other people and climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Organised by Charity Challenge, Phillip will spend the next 13 days acclimatising and trekking to the summit of the mountain to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.

He is taking time out of his A Level studies to support a charity that is very close to his heart. Phillip explains:

'I'm from a really close family and cancer has affected all of us. My granddad died from it and my grandma has suffered, but recovered, from it. I want to do something to help fight the disease and this seemed a good way to do it.'

Through work Phillip has largely funded the cost of the expedition and equipment and hopes to raise more than £1000 for the charity through fundraising and sponsorship. He continues:

'I've done all sorts of activities - tombolas, raffles, street collections - to raise funds for Cancer Research and I am grateful to all of the local companies that have supported this. I'm also grateful for the sponsorship from friends and family and staff and students at QE.'

At College, Phillip is in his second year studying A Levels in Physics, Maths and PE. Next Autumn he plans a gap year working and travelling before joining the RAF and training to be a pilot. He concludes:

'I am a little nervous about the climb but more than anything I'm excited.'

If anyone wishes to support Phillip and Cancer Research UK, donations can be forwarded to him c/o Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, Vane Terrace, Darlington DL3 7AU; telephone 01325 461315.
