Anglo – German Fellowship
Two students from QE have just returned from Germany after spending two weeks in Mulheim on the British Council’s Anglo-German Fellowship Programme. Sarah Harrison and Gary Lodge - both second year A Level students at QE - were hosted by the College’s partner school, the Otto-Pankok Schule, and stayed with German families. Whilst in Mulheim they went to school every day and carried out research projects. Gary’s was about transport issues and Sarah’s focussed on how languages are learnt in German schools. Competition to win places on the Fellowship Programme is intense.
Penny Porter, Head of German said:
"Gary and Sarah are the first students from QE to be accepted on the Anglo-German Fellowship Programme and I was absolutely delighted when I heard they had both secured places. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to put their German speaking skills into practice and learn more about the way of life in Germany, in particular the German education system. Both have returned to College with a renewed enthusiasm for German and their studies in general. It has been a real confidence booster for them."
Gary lives in Bedale and is planning to study German and Economics at university.
He commented:
"I was ecstatic to be offered a place especially as I had never been to Germany before. The experience was unique. I had the chance to meet new people, sample a different lifestyle and improve my German. I am also more motivated than ever because I noticed how passionate the German people are about all aspects of life and how they want to succeed to the highest level in everything they do."
Sarah, from Richmond, added:
"It was fantastic to take part in the Fellowship Programme. It was a great opportunity to practise and improve my German and I really enjoyed meeting all the students in the German school. The visit helped me to prepare for University, where I will be studying German and Russian."
