QE Welcomes New Citizens
On Monday, December 15th QE hosted Darlington Borough Council’s 63rd Citizenship Ceremony. 16 new UK citizens – adults and children - swore their oath of allegiance to the Crown before an audience of their family and friends, students and staff from the College and civic dignitaries. It is only the second time that the Council has taken the ceremony out of the Town Hall and the College was delighted to be the chosen venue.
Cabinet Member, Councillor Andy Scott, explained:
"Bringing the ceremony into the community is part of our strategy for interacting with young people and engaging them in citizenship. The government introduced the Citizenship Ceremony in 2004 and during this ceremony at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, we welcomed our 250th new citizen to Darlington."
Joy Colthup, Director of Enrichment at QE, added:
"It was an honour to host the event and welcome the new citizens. Everybody enjoyed it and I was delighted that our students were able to witness the ceremony and be actively involved."
