Black History Month

Black History Month

Black History Month was celebrated at College during October. This is a national campaign to recognise the contributions to society made by black people, and to celebrate the diversity within our communities. At College, profiles of successful black people in a range of fields were displayed in the Student Common Room, Atrium and Library. These included Baroness Amos, the country’s first black woman cabinet minister; Benjamin Zephaniah, poet and novelist; Sonita Alleyne, Chief Executive and co-founder of UK production company Somethin’ Else and Arthur Wharton, first black professional footballer who also has a local connection. Before transferring to the professional team of Rotherham Town in 1889, Arthur began his footballing life as goalkeeper for Darlington Football Club.

Postcards were displayed in all classrooms to raise awareness further and students entered a competition based on the displays around the College. Laura Ward, Equality and Diversity Co-ordinator of the Student Association, said:

“ The Student Association felt very privileged to be able to promote Black History Month to our fellow students and all members of the College community. We believe it is very important to promote the achievements of all people and to celebrate diversity.”
