A Tale of Telescopes, Time Travel & Extra – Terrestrials
On Wednesday 18 November the Institute of Physics brought its schools’ and colleges’ lecture tour to QE.
"It’s the first time we have hosted one of the lectures and we are absolutely delighted," says John Thorley, Head of Physics at QE. "There has been so much interest and about 400 young people from 9 local schools and colleges heard Dr Andrew Newsam speak about ‘Exploring the Universe’ - how telescopes can help us to understand more about the origins and future of the universe. It was very exciting and extremely pleasing that 120 of our own students listened to the lecture. The lecture and show involved hands-on demonstrations giving students the opportunity to do some astronomy themselves, using some of the most advanced telescopes in the world."
The lecture tour has been on the road since February and will move on to Hexham, Newcastle and Wales before concluding in December. Dr Newsam is a Reader in Astronomy Education at the Astrophysics Research Institute at Liverpool John Moores University and Director of the National Schools Observatory.
