Help for Cumbrian Flood Victims

Seeing the pictures and hearing the stories of those who braved the floods in Cumbria hit a strong chord with Julie Johnson. In the summer Julie – who lives in Darlington - suffered the devastation of her home being flooded and left uninhabitable after a hot water pipe burst while she and her family were enjoying a weekend away. Currently Julie, husband Luke and her young family are living in rented accommodation and will not move back home until at least April.

Very much moved by the plight of the Cumbrian flood victims and being acutely reminded of her own distress, Julie was determined to do what she could to help and wracked her brains for ideas. She decided to raise money for the Flood Appeal by making packed lunches for her work colleagues at QE where she is Head of English Literature.

Julie explains:

"Following from what we had gone through and are still experiencing, I just had to do something. Staff at QE were very supportive and I had orders for over 70 lunches and raised a sum well in excess of £300. As well as thanking all the staff at QE who supported me, a big thank you also goes to local business who helped: Imperial Express for giving me the sandwich bags, Peters the Bakers for donating bread buns, Asda and West Park Cafe for giving raffle prizes and IT teacher Mike McTimoney for supplying fresh eggs from his chickens. Everyone has been fantastic and cheese sandwiches were the favourites!"
