Back from Washington DC
A group of students studying A Level Politics at QE have just returned from a truly memorable trip to Washington DC.
The Darlington group joined forces with 46 students from Shrewsbury Sixth Form College and enjoyed a full week’s political itinerary which included tours of the Capitol Building and the Supreme Court along with gallery tickets for both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Cultural experiences such as visiting Arlington Cemetery, the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial, the National Museum of American History, the National Holocaust Museum and the Washington Monument and White House were also laid on. In addition, the students were privileged to meet Senator Bernie Sanders and had thought provoking meetings with speakers from the National Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, the National Rifle Association and the chief lobbyist for the National Abortion Federation.
Student Izzy Shahab remarked:
“I had never been to America and the trip did help to breakdown my preconceptions. I saw a beautiful city built on the bones of revolution and struggle. I have never known patriotism like that I experienced at every landmark, monument, and museum. People were friendly and very willing to converse on topics other than Politics such as football, Shakespeare and British opinions. It was a fantastic experience.”
Gary Hogg, Head of Politics at QE, said:
“I would like to thank Shrewsbury Sixth Form College and especially their Head of Politics, Dave Charlton, for setting up the trip and allowing our students to participate. Without their cooperation this trip would not have happened. Not only did our students get to experience America’s capital city, but they were able to discuss Politics with students from another college.”
