Safety First

Safety has been very much on the mind of Stephen Smith, a student at QE. As part of his A Level Media course he took on a live brief from the Police and designed a campaign to raise awareness of safety issues amongst young people.
The project was intensive and involved detailed research into the requirements of the client and the target group.

Stephen says:

"It was challenging but exciting to work for a real client. The brief was different and I am really pleased with the outcome."

The Police and QE are also delighted with Stephen’s finished work and both will use his designs and materials to raise awareness of safety issues amongst students. Indeed the Police are planning to use Stephen’s posters, pamphlets and stickers with pupils in all of Darlington’s schools.

Mark Dixon, Head of Media: Communication & Production at QE adds:

"Stephen has been meticulous in his research and I am extremely pleased that it has been so well received. I believe his work will be valuable in raising awareness of safety issues amongst young people and that it will help Mark achieve the high grade he deserves in his final A Level assessment."

At QE Stephen is studying A Level Psychology, Business and Media: Communication & Production. After taking his final exams in June, he hopes to go to university to read a degree in Retail Management.

Inspector Steven Steen, Darlington Neighbourhood Inspector said:

"Stephen has produced some brilliant work highlighting to young people of Darlington personal safety issues and understanding the need for personal responsibility regarding their belongings. We are always eager to engage with the young people of Darlington and it is refreshing to put a young person's stance on a crime related issue."
