England Hockey in Portugal

Sophie Watchman, a student at QE, has had a superb year, combining rigorous academic study with extensive sporting achievement.

Her programme of study has included A Levels in Psychology, English Language, PE and Critical Thinking and, in the Autumn, she is going on to Northumbria University to study Psychology and Criminology. Her aim is to eventually join the police and work in CID. As well as being an excellent student, Sophie is an exceptional all round sportswoman. She has represented QE in a range of sports including football, rugby and hockey and has made a massive contribution to sport in the College generally. However, hockey is her real passion and her talent, hard work and commitment to training in the sport has been acknowledged by her selection for an international tour to Portugal with British Colleges’ Sport. Sophie‘s position is right mid field.

On July 28, Sophie will travel with the England squad to train with elite Portuguese hockey players and to play 5 matches against them.

Sophie says:

"I am absolutely thrilled to have been selected to represent my country at this level and will do my best to ensure the team is successful. It’s a real honour. However, the tour to Portugal is not being funded and I have to find £700 to cover the cost of kit, travel and accommodation. I’m trying to fundraise and find some sponsorship to help cover the expense but it’s very difficult in the current economic climate."

Sophie has had some help with her expenses from Darlington Rotary Club and the College but needs more support. If anyone is able to sponsor Sophie, please contact QE on 01325 461315 – any help would be very much appreciated.
