- QE Welcomes New Citizens
On Monday, December 15th QE hosted Darlington Borough Council’s 63rd Citizenship Ceremony. 16 new UK citizens – adults and children - swore their oath of allegiance to the Crown before an audience of their family and friends, students and staff from the College and civic dignitaries. It is only the second time that the Council has taken the ceremony out of the Town Hall and the College was delighted to be the chosen venue.
December 16, 2008 - Anglo – German Fellowship
Two students from QE have just returned from Germany after spending two weeks in Mulheim on the British Council’s Anglo-German Fellowship Programme. Sarah Harrison and Gary Lodge - both second year A Level students at QE - were hosted by the College’s partner school, the Otto-Pankok Schule, and stayed with German families. Whilst in Mulheim they went to school every day and carried out research projects. Gary’s was about transport issues and Sarah’s focussed on how languages are learnt in German schools. Competition to win places on the Fellowship Programme is intense.
December 15, 2008 - Make Your Enterprising Mark
Business Studies and Economic students at QE recently took part in the government sponsored Make Your Mark Enterprise Challenge, the UK’s largest one day enterprise challenge for secondary schools and colleges. Eighty- seven students were involved in this exciting and challenging initiative which focused on creating an innovative and entrepreneurial idea inspired by the Olympic & Paralympics Values. Each group produced a business plan that incorporated the Olympic Values and presented this to a panel of judges.
December 3, 2008 - Planning For The Future
QE is looking at options for expanding its premises. At present more than 1800 students attend the College, but demand is expected to increase over the next 5-7 years due to changes in the delivery of 14-19 education and the proposed raising of the school leaving age. As one of the country’s leading sixth form colleges, QE is keen to ensure that its facilities are up to date and capable of meeting the requirements of a changing curriculum and the needs of learners. The College is already working closely with Darlington Council to raise attainment in the Borough and has therefore approached the Council to see if it can purchase part of the neighbouring Arts Centre.
November 25, 2008 - Science at Work
A group of 7 staff from the Environment Agency spent a morning at QE working with students studying AS Level Applied Science.
November 25, 2008 - British Colleges’ Sport - North East Regional Trials
As part of the trial process for selecting England representative teams in football, rugby, netball and hockey, British Colleges’ Sport run a series of regional trials. Students from QE recently attended the North- East trials and, to their credit, 18 were selected for further trials with a chance of winning places on national squads. The North-East region is one of the largest of the 7 regions encompassing Northumberland, Durham, Teesside and Yorkshire and competition to get through to the next round of trials was intense.
November 19, 2008 - Netball Superleague Starlets
Three QE students - Rachel Bird, Becca Eldrington and Rachel Dauber - are sampling the exciting new Netball Superleague with Team Northumbria. The Superleague is a national league involving 10 top teams as well as the best English and world players and it is really taking off in popularity now that there is coverage of live games and highlights on Sky Sports.
November 19, 2008 - The Holocaust Remembered
Recently, Daniel Pearson and Lois Jermyn – students at QE - joined more than 200 other young people from the North East to fly to Poland to visit Auschwitz Concentration Camp. The group was brought together by the Holocaust Educational Trust whose aim is to ensure that the horrors of the Holocaust are not forgotten and that lessons from history are learned.
November 17, 2008 - St Trinian's Day 2008
Students and staff went back to school for a day, putting on their old school uniforms, enjoying fun and games and making the best possible use of a tuck shop!
November 5, 2008 - Come and Look Around
QE will hold its Open Evenings for entry September 2009 on Wednesday 12th November and Tuesday 18th November. The College will be open from 6.30pm until 9.00pm and prospective students are invited to come along to look around, meet staff and students and find out exactly what is on offer. The Principal, Tim Fisher will talk about the College at 6.30pm, 7.15pm and 8.00pm.
