- Help for Cumbrian Flood Victims
Seeing the pictures and hearing the stories of those who braved the floods in Cumbria hit a strong chord with Julie Johnson. In the summer Julie – who lives in Darlington - suffered the devastation of her home being flooded and left uninhabitable after a hot water pipe burst while she and her family were enjoying a weekend away. Currently Julie, husband Luke and her young family are living in rented accommodation and will not move back home until at least April.
December 14, 2009 - Darlington appoints UK’s first ‘Twitterer in Residence’
Darlington has become the first town in the UK to appoint a ‘Twitterer in Residence’. Many towns and cities have artists and writers in residence but Darlington came up with the idea of an official Twitterer to keep people up to date with the goings on in the borough.
December 14, 2009 - Representing the North
After rigorous selection trials, three students from QE have won places in the British Colleges’ North Rugby Union Squad. Sam Errington, James Hyde and Cole Henderson will now go on to face strong opposition in December when they play the Midlands and the South in two trial games for the full England squads.
November 23, 2009 - Christmas Gifts for Romania
Once again, students at QE organised their annual Christmas Shoe Box appeal. Students and staff enthusiastically collected items such as toys, colouring books, pens, sweets and toiletries which have now been wrapped and sent to needy children in Romania.
November 23, 2009 - Working for Rural England
Strong links are developing between the students of QE and the Campaign to Protection Rural England (CPRE). Elizabeth Mann and Tony Winnett, the Chair and Vice Chair of the Durham Branch of CPRE, have visited the College on several occasions to publicise their work and to enlist the help of students as volunteers. Their latest visit to the College involved a presentation to about 100 members of the Student Association where they talked about their work, inspiring students to get involved in campaigns against littering and generally being interested in preserving the beauty of the countryside for future generations.
November 23, 2009 - Art Students Show Their Work In London
Jessica Everitt and David Fawcett - students studying Art Foundation at QE – were thrilled to have their pictures hung in the Royal Society of Marine Artists’ Exhibition in the prestigious Mall Galleries in London. The Society ran a Young Artists’ Competition based on the theme of the Sea and Jessica and David were among only eight young artists whose work was shortlisted.

On Wednesday 18 November the Institute of Physics brought its schools’ and colleges’ lecture tour to QE.
November 18, 2009 - Black History Month
Black History Month was celebrated at College during October. This is a national campaign to recognise the contributions to society made by black people, and to celebrate the diversity within our communities. At College, profiles of successful black people in a range of fields were displayed in the Student Common Room, Atrium and Library. These included Baroness Amos, the country’s first black woman cabinet minister; Benjamin Zephaniah, poet and novelist; Sonita Alleyne, Chief Executive and co-founder of UK production company Somethin’ Else and Arthur Wharton, first black professional footballer who also has a local connection. Before transferring to the professional team of Rotherham Town in 1889, Arthur began his footballing life as goalkeeper for Darlington Football Club.
November 17, 2009 - St Trinian’s Fun-draise for the NSPCC
Students at QE organised a St. Trinian’s Day to raise money for the NSPCC. Students and members of staff dressed up in their old school uniforms and the Student Association organised best dressed competitions in a range of categories - best geek, girl, boy and teacher. Bucket collections were organised and more than £250 was raised.
