The Level 3 Creative Media Practice National Diploma will be studied over two years and is the equivalent to one and a half A Levels. It is aimed at those wanting to work in the Creative Media sector in industries such as Journalism, TV and Advertising to name a few.

The course provides you with underpinning knowledge of Creative Media techniques and industrial frameworks. There is an emphasis on the development of research skills, teamwork and practical skills such as photography, filming, camera work, editing and image manipulation, with a focus on skills development, advertising and magazine production. If you are passionate about the media industry, and enjoy working in a creative, exciting environment, then studying Creative Media Practice is the course for you. This is a practical and industry-focused course which will enable you to progress onto a career as a journalist, graphic designer, filmmaker, YouTuber or social media content producer.

Course Content

This creative and technical course is designed to stretch and challenge those who are looking to progress into a career in the media industry. You will have the opportunity to explore a choice of sector areas, and will develop key practical and research skills. This fast paced, exciting qualification will allow you to develop and test your creativity. You will be provided with the skills, knowledge and behaviours needed to progress to degree level study or employment.

You will work within our Media Classrooms on Apple Mac computers, with up to date creative editing suites to gain experience in the planning and production of a wide variety of media products, as well as engaging with local and national businesses to work on live industry briefs.

The media department runs a number of trips and visits to support your studies. Eg a visit to Warner Bros Studios, residential or day trips to London, and also residential trips to New York! You will also have the chance to meet a number of guest speakers who work in different areas of the industry.

Modules:

A1 – Skills Development: You will explore key fundamentals of media practice, learning how skills are integrated and connected to generate developed outcomes. We will develop skills in photography, image manipulation, video editing, magazine layout to name a few

A2 – Creative Project: You will apply the skills you have been developing throughout the course to a creative project that demonstrates your ability to self-direct a response to a brief, from inception to the completed media product.

How it is Taught

You will engage in a range of learning and assessment styles and be encouraged to become effective and independent in researching and presenting work. Work based assignments will enable you to engage with your own practice and to share knowledge and expertise with others through activities such as group work and presentations.

Entry Requirements

It is strongly recommended that you have a grade 4 in GCSE English.

In this subject, particular skills and aptitudes will be required, many of which will be demonstrated by students’ GCSE profiles.

Students will also need to meet the general College entry requirements. Entry requirements are subjects to change.

Careers & HE Information

On successful completion of this course you may progress to University to study a creative degree or move into employment or an apprenticeship in the media industry. Past students opting to extend their media knowledge after the course have chosen university courses in the following areas: animation, TV production, radio production, multimedia technology, web design, public relations, fashion, advertising, journalism, communication studies and scriptwriting. Some students use the skills they have gained on the course to find employment. A small number of students have entered directly into media related training and employment programmes at the Northern Echo and the BBC.
