‘Art in the doorways’

THE first stage of an arts project aimed to brighten up the entrances to Darlington’s Victorian Market Hall went on display on Tuesday 2October.

Residents and visitors to Darlington will soon enjoy four large pieces of artwork that will hang on display in the entrances to Darlington Market Hall from November 2012.

‘Art in the doorways’ is a collaborative project between Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College students and Darlington Markets. Work from students studying for the BTEC Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art and Design have come up with initial design ideas to brighten up the doorways.

An exhibition of these initial ideas can be viewed in the windows of the vacant shops in the Market Hall on West Row.

Residents and visitors to the town then need to vote for the design they would most want to see hanging in the entrance of the hall. To vote simply select your chosen student and place it in the voting box, which is situated at the main entrance to the indoor market building on West Row from Wednesday 3 October until Friday 12 October.

The four most voted for pieces of art will then be chosen to be made into large hanging display versions to be displayed within the entrances to the Market Hall.

Councillor Chris McEwan, Darlington Council’s Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration said:  “The ‘Arts in the Doorways’ projects offers the market hall a fabulous opportunity to brighten up the doorway areas, to add a colourful and bright start/end to visitors shopping experiences and gives the students a great opportunity to show some of their work in the lime-light.

The artworks will be a representation of the character and history of the market, capturing the vibrant sights of market life and the wide-range of unique, quality independent market stalls, which will hopefully entertain people who usually shop in the market hall and entice new shoppers to come into the building.
