Thirty – one students travelled to the University of Bath to spend a weekend competing in the 35th British Colleges’ Sport National Finals.
At Bath, champions from eight regions in England, plus Wales and Scotland, competed in fourteen different sports to determine the British Colleges’ national champions. Over 2500 young people took part and the QE students, having already won their respective regional titles, represented the North East in events across seven different sports – Swimming, Netball, Trampolining, Badminton, XCountry, Squash and Tennis.
Success stories over the weekend included Charlotte Young winning Gold in her individual swimming event and Melissa Foster, Hannah Sharp and Charlotte being part of the Gold winning North East Relay swimming team. In Squash, Rob Pearce won a Bronze Medal and in Badminton, Nathan Stewart-Walker and Beth Vickerman finished 4th in their respective Men’s and Women’s singles events. Students from the College also enjoyed encouraging performances in Netball, X-Country and Trampolining, all finishing in respectable positions and doing themselves and the College proud.
Paul Carroll, QE’s Sports Development Co-ordinator, commented:
“To have students qualify in 7 of 14 sports was brilliant. Taking 31 students to the Nationals saw our College well represented at the Finals. Everyone enjoyed the weekend and learnt and gained from such a valuable experience. All staff who accompanied the students were pleased with not only their sporting ability but also their behaviour, enthusiasm and sense of teamwork and togetherness. They were a pleasure to work with and to take to National Finals.”
