Next weekend, 31 students from QE are going to the University of Bath to compete in the British Colleges’ Sport National Finals. Sport is an integral part of college life at QE, with many students combining sporting and academic success.
At Bath, champions from 8 regions in England, plus Wales and Scotland, will compete in 14 different sports to determine the British national champions. Over 2500 young people will take part in this year’s championships and the QE students, having already won their respective regional titles, will represent the North East in events across 7 different sports – Swimming, Netball, Trampolining, Badminton, XCountry, Squash and Tennis.
To help with the costs of going to the Finals the students organised a number of fundraising activities including a cake sale, bag packing at Morrisons, a Dodgeball competition and a Sports Lottery.
Paul Carroll, QE’s Sports Development Co-ordinator, commented:
“To have students qualify in 7 of 14 sports is outstanding. Taking 31 students to the Nationals makes QE one of the most well represented colleges at the finals and therefore one of the best colleges for sporting opportunities in the country. All of the students are a credit to the College, their families and themselves and their sporting ability is there for all to see. However, their commitment, behaviour, enthusiasm and sense of teamwork are equally as impressive. They are a pleasure to work with.”
The College and the students would like to thank Lifestyle Fitness, Darlington, the County at Aycliffe Village and The Black Olive, Delicatessen & Coffee House in Darlington for donating prizes and helping the students with their fundraising.
