Ex-QE student provides Physiotherapy overview

It’s always a rewarding experience when staff and students at QE hear from former students about their achievements after College. Louise Kelso studied Biology, Chemistry and Psychology at QE having completed her GCSEs at Hummersknott Academy. ‘I loved my time at QE and there was a smooth transition from secondary school to college’, she comments. ‘I particularly enjoyed the atmosphere as all of the students who were there wanted to be there and were studying subjects which interested them. I also appreciated the opportunity to fill study periods with what I wanted, whether that be extra-curricular activities that the College provided or simply time to study or relax with friends’.

After having left QE, Louise went on to complete a Physiotherapy degree at Leeds Metropolitan University and initially worked in the acute sector. She gained valuable experience in hospitals before making the decision to branch out into the community and work with people in their own homes. However, the recent pandemic has meant that the way in which she works required a complete overhaul and PPE, the avoidance of hospitals and rehabilitation of COVID-19 patients became the new norm.

Louise’s advice for QE students is: ‘Enjoy every minute of your college experience and value all of the experience staff have to offer you as there are so many teachers who are passionate about the subjects they teach’. When asked about advice for students wanting to work in Physiotherapy, she explains: ‘I would recommend obtaining some work experience as this will allow you to see what happens on a day-to-day basis. You’ll also have the opportunity to look at all of the different areas available to you career wise, there is more to Physiotherapy than sporting injuries!’

If you are a former student and have a story to share, we would love to hear from you. If you could email qe@qeliz.ac.uk with your details, a member of staff will be in touch.
