Staff at QE have said a fond farewell to Senior Caretaker, Peter Hakin, who at the age of 70 has retired following 23 years at the College. Peter started working at the age of 15 for the North of England School Furnishing Company Ltd (NESCO LTD) before obtaining a Full Technological Certificate in Building Studies at Darlington College and joining Lab Systems Furniture Ltd in Hartlepool. This role gave Peter the opportunity to travel the length and breadth of the United Kingdom, visiting many different institutions and universities, and sharing his knowledge with everyone he met. Since joining QE, he has witnessed and been involved in several changes which have occurred to the building, including the major refurbishment of the Library and the construction of the new Stanhope Building.
Looking back upon his time at QE, Peter comments: ‘I have enjoyed every minute of my time working here and have met some wonderful people. I wish everybody the very best for the future’. Principal, Tim Fisher, adds: ‘Peter is one of the nicest individuals with whom I have had the pleasure of working. He is an excellent colleague and will be sorely missed by everybody here at QE. We would like to thank him for all of his hard work over the past 23 years and wish him a very long and happy retirement.’
