QE has a rich history of forming close relationships with local universities and this year, the tradition has continued. To aid them with their studies, twelve intrepid first year English Language students have spent an inspiring day with the linguistics department at York St. John University. The workshop began with the group watching and quizzing third year undergraduates as they presented their completed dissertations before participating in taster sessions on accents and dialects. They also received an introduction to British Sign Language and benefitted from a tour of the university.
Steph Thompson, teacher of English Language who accompanied the students to the event, comments: ‘The students had a great day and obtained a valuable insight into student life at York St. John University. We would like to thank the University for hosting the workshop, in addition to the undergraduates for allowing our students to be involved in such an important part of their academic career’.
