QE achieves Rainbow Flag Award

Date Posted: 03/11/2021 | Posted In: Latest news

Staff and students at QE are delighted to have been awarded the full Rainbow Flag Award, a national quality assurance framework for schools and colleges. The programme, which seeks to improve LGBT+ inclusion and visibility, has six areas to complete: student voice, pastoral support, skilled teacher, inclusive curriculum, effective policies and supportive governors with each section requiring comprehensive evidence. For QE, the majority of the evidence was put together by the College’s LGBT+ group which is run by the Student Association and has students at the centre of its work. The group meet weekly and look to enhance the experience of LGBT+ students at the College having introduced several positive changes including awareness training and a peer-on-peer support group. Recently, on International Pronoun Day, they produced badges to give to staff and fellow students to ensure all genders felt comfortable and were recognised.

Nancy Wall, Student Services Co-ordinator at QE, comments: ‘The LGBT+ group have been instrumental in driving positive change within the College. We are an actively inclusive College and constantly strive to improve the lives of our LGBT+ students, however my hope is that in the future we won’t need awards for inclusion as, in society generally, we’ll all be living side by side without judgement and discrimination’.
