A Level English Language students from QE have enjoyed an inspiring visit to a local university to obtain a flavour of undergraduate life and studies. The group of budding linguists spent the day at York St. John University, a popular choice for QE students, where they were hosted by senior lecturer, Nikki Swift, from the department of Language and Linguistics. Nikki delivered a masterclass in the two fascinating areas of World Englishes and the development of children’s phonology before students toured the University’s campus and met up with QE alumni, Ethan Burn. Ethan studied English Language, Travel and Tourism, and English Literature at QE and now reads English Language, Linguistics and TESOL at York St. John.
The students were very impressed by the welcome they received at the University with Harvey Abbott-Brown commenting: ‘The people were really nice and the place looked great – a fantastic mixture of old and new. It looked like it meant business!’ Harvey studies A Level English Language, Fine Art and Film Studies at QE. Meanwhile, Maya Watson, who is enrolled on A Level English Language, Law and Politics, adds: ‘It was interesting to learn about the huge range of topics you can study as part of English Language. The campus was incredible!’ Paul Heselton, Course Leader for English Language at QE, concludes: ‘We always love getting out to university departments like York St. John to find out about future opportunities for our students when they have completed their A Levels. We’d like to thank York St. John and Nikki for hosting us.’
