A Level students QE have relished the exciting opportunity to visit the brand-new HM Treasury in Darlington to find out about the range of apprenticeships available and learn about life in the civil service. During the visit, they met with Lucy Frazer, Financial Secretary to the Treasury and MP for South East Cambridgeshire, who discussed her role and the areas members of the civil service can work in during their career. Lucy spoke about how working for the civil service allows individuals to make a lasting difference to people’s lives in the UK and how there are excellent opportunities for career development. The group was then joined by Lisa Vicary, HM Treasury Outreach Manager, who provided detailed advice on the department’s apprenticeship schemes with an overview of the application procedure and the roles available.
Student, Jessica Fairley, who studies History, Maths and Politics at QE, comments: ‘It was a really interesting and beneficial experience to meet someone who works at the top of the Treasury. I now feel more informed about the civil service and the possibility of working in this sector in the future.’ Joe Clendenning, who has just completed his A Levels in Business, Maths and PE, adds: ‘I really enjoyed being able to look around the Treasury in Darlington. I think that it’s a great facility and will provide many opportunities for young people like myself and others in the North East. It will also hopefully integrate the North and South’.
Liz Bryan, Higher Education and Careers Adviser, concludes: ‘This was a great event for our students to not only meet Lucy Frazer MP and find out about her role in the Treasury, but to also obtain an insight into the different departments that employees can work in as they progress through their careers. It’s brilliant that our students will have access to some fantastic apprenticeships with the potential to work in both Darlington and London’.
