A level Sport and Leisure students from Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, Darlington have been going out into the local community, raising dementia awareness and the issues surrounding this. As part of their Level 3 sport course they are working with a number of different groups including older people, people living with dementia and children with disabilities. This has involved them supporting the delivery of a series of activity sessions designed to promote a healthy heart, maintain flexibility and increae self-esteem . To enhance this experience, and develop their understanding, all of the students have completed the Alzeimer’s Society Dementia Friends course. Students from QE’s Travel & Tourism and Sport & Leisure departments have been delivering these courses in a variety of locations for the last three years.
Nancy Wall, course leader, said ” The students are fantastic, working with all of the groups is a challenge, however they get so much from working with those living with dementia, I am very proud of them”.
QE Student Rob Bailey added “It is important to gain an understanding of the people in our community, everyone knows someone with Dementia, the course has made me more aware of this and understand it better”.
