12 students from QE have claimed their places to represent the North East at the prestigious Association of Colleges Sport National Championships. They fought off strong competition in the North East regional championships held across venues in Middlesbrough and will now compete against students from across the country. The 2017 National Championships will be held at state-of-the-art facilities at the University of Nottingham on 21st-23rd April 2017.
The Championships remain the largest annual student sporting event in the UK. Nearly 1,800 college students took part last year, and it can provide a fantastic springboard for competitors, with Olympic gold medallist Adam Peaty having competed in the 2013 Championships.
The North East tennis team will be an all-QE team of 3 as Daniel Tarokh took first place, winning all his matches and Andy McBride and Chris Hay finished 2nd and 3rd. Sam Parnaby came 4th. In Badminton, the group winner and qualifier Daniel Smart won all 3 of his games against challenging opposition; he was closely followed by Finn Sheehan. The only qualifying place for Squash was taken by Oliver Walls who will be looking to go one better than his silver medal at last year’s event. Miles Brookes was third. In the Cross Country, QE runners Aaron King, Ben Lambert, James Greer, James Terrill and Jamie Wood all qualified as did Jade Hutchinson and Sadie Abel in the girls’ section.
Mark Scott, PE teacher at QE, comments: “We are really proud of our students – they thoroughly deserve their places and we know that they will do very well in the National Championships. Congratulations to everyone who has qualified.”
