Ryan’s American Dream

Date Posted: 23/07/2018 | Posted In: Latest news

The 4th August will be the start of a journey Ryan Kirby couldn’t have imagined when he began his studies at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College in Darlington. For this is the date when Ryan embarks on an exciting opportunity to study a degree in Aviation Business Administration in Florida whilst on a football scholarship. Playing in the Sunshine State conference for the Embry Riddle Eagles, Ryan will be able to combine his Higher Education aspirations with playing football at an elite level. Being selected to study at Embry Riddle Aviation and Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach is a wonderful achievement and is testament to both his academic and sporting prowess. The university is a world leader in the field of aeronautics and aviation and Ryan’s degree will enable him to follow his passion for Economics which he discovered whilst studying the subject for A Level at QE.

Growing up in Wynyard, Ryan has played football his entire life. He spent 4 years at Newcastle United FC Academy but decided to leave to enable him to continue his education which he values so highly. The past few seasons have been particularly successful for Ryan. After playing a year for Durham County and reaching the FA Counties Youth Cup semi final and winning the league title, he was chosen to captain his county and led them to the defence of the league title. Playing for Stockton Town FC U18s has also seen Ryan win the league cup and county cup in the past season and collecting the Players’ player, Manager’s player and Supporters’ player of the season.

Ryan comments, “My scholarship in America is a huge opportunity for me. I am aware it isn’t going to be easy; adjusting to a different country’s lifestyle, climate and people will be a test for me but it’s something I’m looking forward to tackling. I feel lucky to be in this position but I’ve worked very hard to get to this place. I am proud of myself but I’m well aware that the hard work must continue.”

He adds “Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College has been very helpful and has supported me through the process for my scholarship. The office and exam staff and career advisors have helped me get all my correct paperwork in place which has eased the stress of having everything ready for August. QE is a college that values extra – curricular activities and understands the many different ways its students can be successful.”

Ryan concludes, “Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my family and friends for the love and support they’ve given me. I couldn’t have asked for a better support system which my family has provided. I love them very much.”

Laurence Job, Vice Principal at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College, states “We are incredibly proud of Ryan’s fantastic achievement. It is thoroughly deserved as Ryan has shown absolute commitment to his academic studies and his footballing success. He is a very talented young man with an extremely bright future ahead of him. We wish him the very best.”
