Student Profiles 2023
Below you can read about how some of our students have performed in their A Level results:
Hazel Ashford
Hazel Ashford from Darlington is celebrating after having achieved four A* grades in Biology, Geography, Geology and Extended Project. She will now be attending the University of Sheffield to study Biology, with a placement year.
She says of her time at QE ‘I really appreciated the kindness of staff members and how they went above and beyond to help achieve the grades I wanted’.


Saksham Lingthep
Saksham Lingthep, from Catterick Garrison, has achieved A* grades in Chemistry and Extended Project, and As in Computer Science and Mathematics, and will be going to the University of Edinburgh to study Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science.
He says ‘I have really enjoyed all the support I have received for all my subjects. I always felt like my teachers really cared about my progress and learning’.
Mia Wetherill
Mia Wetherill, from Darlington, will be continuing her studies at Lancaster University, studying Social Work. She is leaving QE with A* grades in Psychology and Sociology, and Distinction* in Health and Social Care.
She explains: ‘QE was very enjoyable, and I really liked studying subjects I hadn’t previously know anything about. I found the staff really supportive too.’


Paul Davison
Paul Davison from Darlington is moving on to University of Cambridge to complete a degree in Natural Sciences. He achieved four A* grades in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry.
Reflecting on the past academic year, he comments: ‘Staff at QE really help students to be the best they can be – they are really supportive and encouraging.
Genevieve Ferrari
Genevieve Ferrari from Richmond will move on to University College London (UCL) to study Psychology after having obtained two A* grades in English Literature, German & Extended Project and an A in History Modern.
She states that: ‘The extensive range of opportunities provided by staff and the people I’ve been able meet have really made my time as a student the most enjoyable.’


Sam Jackson
Sam Jackson from Ingleby Barwick will move on to the University of Oxford to study Mathematics after having obtained three A* grades in Maths, Further Maths and Chemistry, and an A in Biology.
He explains that at QE he: ‘Has grown in confidence, and happy to take on a new challenge with my place at Oxford University’.
Jessica Fairley
Jessica Fairley from Darlington will begin her career by completing a degree in Politics with Economics at Bath University. She secured two A* grades in History and Extended Project, an A grade in Maths and B in Politics.
‘The teachers were really supportive, and there was a real community within the college’.


Ben Alderson
Celebrations are in order for Ben Alderson from Newton Aycliffe who will read History at Durham University. He achieved two A grades in Law and Modern History, and a Distinction* in Sport & Leisure. Ben is thrilled to have also secured a Water Polo scholarship alongside his studies.
‘All of my subjects have been both interactive and interesting, and my teachers have really helped me to achieve the results I needed ’.
Sarah-Lily Phizackerley
Sarah-Lily Phizackerley from Bishop Auckland is celebrating after having obtained a place at Lancaster University to study Film and Creative Writing. She gained an A* grade in Extended Project, and three A grades in English Literature, Film Studies and Religious Studies.
‘I have really enjoyed the enrichment activities, including Creative Writing Club and the various languages available’.


Tom I’Anson
Tom I’Anson, from Darlington has gained three Dinstinction* grades in Sport and Leisure, and a Distinction grade in IT meaning he has secured his place at Teesside University to study Computer and Digital Forensics.
He comments: ‘I have really developed my confidence whilst at QE, being able to gain lots of new experiences. My teachers have been really helpful, and guided me through my journey here. ’
